LAHORE: When the pressure is at its highest and the stakes are greatest, true champions rise to the occasion. Fakhar Zaman once again proved why he is Pakistan’s genuine big-match performer, smashing a breathtaking century, while half-centuries from Saad Baig and Arafat Minhas powered Pakistan to a thrilling three-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the ODI Tri-Series final at Lahore on Saturday.
Chasing a challenging target of 326, Pakistan reached 331 for seven in 48.3 overs, with Fakhar's magnificent 127 off just 99 deliveries providing the backbone of a memorable run chase. His commanding innings, featuring 11 fours and six sixes, was a powerful reminder of his ability to deliver when Pakistan need him most.
Fakhar was not merely scoring runs; he was taking the fight to the opposition, refusing to allow the mounting pressure to dictate terms. His fearless stroke play, remarkable composure and attacking intent transformed a daunting chase into a realistic possibility. Rightfully named Player of the Match, he once again demonstrated that big occasions bring out the best in him.
Pakistan, however, were tested early. Dilshan Madushanka struck three crucial blows, removing Maaz Sadaqat, Babar Azam and Fakhar to leave the home side searching for stability. But wicketkeeper-batter Saad Baig rose to the challenge, contributing an impressive 74 off 75 balls in a vital partnership with Fakhar that kept Pakistan firmly in the contest.
After Saad's departure, the responsibility shifted to the middle order. Arafat Minhas seized the opportunity with a sensational 61 off just 31 balls, smashing three fours and four sixes. His explosive contribution turned the momentum decisively in Pakistan's favour and underlined his growing reputation as a valuable all-rounder.
Hasan Nawaz remained unbeaten on 37, providing crucial support as Pakistan moved closer to victory. Shaheen Shah Afridi then delivered the finishing touch with an unbeaten six off three balls, ensuring that Pakistan crossed the finish line with nine deliveries remaining.
Shaheen Shah Afridi: Leading from the front
While Fakhar's century dominated the headlines, Shaheen Shah Afridi's contribution with the ball deserves special recognition. Leading the side, the left-arm fast bowler delivered a disciplined and influential spell, claiming two wickets for 50 runs in his 10 overs.
Shaheen struck at important moments, removing Avishka Fernando and Dasun Shanaka, and helped prevent Sri Lanka from accelerating further in the closing stages. His control, aggression and ability to produce breakthroughs under pressure reflected the qualities expected of a leader.
Pakistan's bowling attack also received valuable support from Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah, who claimed two wickets apiece. Rauf conceded 60 runs in 10 overs, while Naseem finished with two for 80. Salman Ali Agha also picked up two wickets, ensuring that Sri Lanka were restricted to 325 for eight.
For Sri Lanka, Kamindu Mendis played a magnificent innings of 131 off 128 deliveries, while Pavan Rathnayake added 77 from 65 balls. Their efforts had put the visitors in a strong position, but Pakistan's batting depth and determination ultimately proved decisive.
Arafat Minhas emerges as Pakistan's all-round hero
The final also belonged to Arafat Minhas, who was deservedly named Player of the Series. His impressive tournament performance included 149 runs and nine wickets, highlighting his growing importance to Pakistan cricket.
His explosive contribution in the final demonstrated his ability to influence matches with the bat, complementing his valuable performances with the ball throughout the series. Ultimately, this was a victory built on courage, character and collective belief. Fakhar Zaman supplied the firepower, Saad Baig provided stability, Arafat Minhas delivered the decisive acceleration, and Shaheen Shah Afridi led the bowling attack with authority.
For Pakistan, the triumph was more than just another victory. It was a statement of intent, with Fakhar once again reminding the cricketing world that when the stakes are high, he remains a warrior who thrives on the biggest stage.
