RAWALPINDI: Pakistan’s emphatic 82-run victory over Sri Lanka in the second T20 International was more than just a commanding performance on the scoreboard, it was a powerful statement about the exciting batting talent emerging in Pakistani cricket. Led by an explosive opening partnership between captain Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman, and illuminated by a sensational 96 from young Maaz Sadaqat, Pakistan delivered a performance full of aggression, confidence and promise.

After being put into a position to make a statement with the bat, Pakistan piled up an imposing 215 for three in 20 overs before restricting Sri Lanka to 133 for seven. The result was a comprehensive victory, but the bigger story was the blend of experience, fearless stroke play and youthful ambition that made Pakistan’s innings so compelling.

Farhan and Fakhar rekindle memories of a golden opening era

Pakistan’s innings began with an attacking display from Fakhar Zaman and Sahibzada Farhan that brought back memories of the exciting opening partnership of Saeed Anwar and Aamer Sohail.

Fakhar, known for his ability to dominate bowling attacks, struck 22 off 17 deliveries, including four boundaries, while Farhan played a more substantial innings, scoring 73 off 44 balls with four fours and five sixes.

The pair gave Pakistan the aggressive start needed to build a formidable total. Their combination of experience, intent and attacking instincts offered a glimpse of what Pakistan’s top order could achieve when its batters are encouraged to play positively rather than merely survive.

Farhan, in particular, demonstrated the qualities expected of a leader. His commanding innings anchored the early momentum and helped create the platform for the explosive finish that followed.

Maaz Sadaqat’s breathtaking 96 steals the spotlight

The night’s most compelling individual performance came from young Maaz Sadaqat, who narrowly missed out on a maiden T20 century after producing a magnificent 96 off just 51 balls.

His innings featured six fours and seven sixes, at a remarkable strike rate of 188.23. It was an exhibition of clean hitting, fearless intent and composure under pressure.

Sadaqat’s ability to find the boundary and clear it with authority transformed an already promising total into a daunting target. He appeared increasingly comfortable against the Sri Lankan attack, combining calculated shot selection with the confidence to punish loose deliveries.

The disappointment of missing a century by just four runs should not overshadow the significance of his achievement. At such a young stage of his career, an innings of this quality offers an encouraging glimpse of his potential.

An Aggressive Batting Philosophy Worth Carrying into ODIs

Pakistan should consider giving Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman regular opportunities in One-Day Internationals to extend their attacking approach beyond T20 cricket. Pakistan possess immense batting talent but often struggle with inconsistent selection and changing combinations. Farhan offers aggression and the ability to build substantial innings, while Fakhar brings experience, power and proven match-winning ability. Together, they could form an exciting partnership blending youth, experience and fearless stroke play. With clearly defined roles and sustained opportunities, both could help Pakistan develop a more positive ODI batting philosophy. The challenge for team management is to build long-term consistency rather than treat this performance as an isolated success.

Mohammad Imran leads a disciplined bowling effort

Pakistan’s bowlers ensured that the batting fireworks translated into a convincing victory. Mohammad Imran was the standout performer, claiming three wickets for just 11 runs in four overs.

Salman Mirza supported him with two wickets, while Saim Ayub and Shadab Khan picked up one each. Sri Lanka struggled to build meaningful partnerships and finished on 133 for seven, well short of the 216-run target.

Maheesh Theekshana remained unbeaten on 32, while Chamindu Wickramasinghe contributed 29, but neither could reverse the momentum established by Pakistan’s imposing total and disciplined bowling.

The bowling performance underlined an important point, as aggressive batting can put opponents under pressure, but accurate, economical bowling is what turns that pressure into a decisive result.
