MEXICO CITY: Mexico secured a place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with a memorable 2-0 victory over Ecuador at the Estadio Azteca on Tuesday, ending a 40-year wait for a knockout-stage win.
The hosts delivered an energetic first-half display, feeding off the support of a packed home crowd. Julian Quinones opened the scoring after finishing a swift counter-attack, giving Mexico an early advantage. Just nine minutes later, Raul Jimenez doubled the lead with a powerful effort, putting Ecuador under immense pressure before halftime.
Mexico dominated the opening period with their pace, intensity and attacking intent, leaving Ecuador struggling to find a response. After the break, Ecuador improved significantly and enjoyed extended spells of possession, pushing forward in search of a comeback. However, Mexico's well-organised defence remained solid and successfully protected their two-goal lead.
The match was delayed by an hour due to severe weather conditions, but the postponement did little to diminish the electric atmosphere inside the iconic Azteca Stadium.
The victory sends Mexico into the last 16, where they will face either England or DR Congo on Sunday. It was a landmark night for Mexican football, as the triumph ended a run of nine unsuccessful attempts to win a World Cup knockout match and delivered the nation's first victory in the competition's knockout rounds since 1986.
