Mbappé Brace Sends France into Knockout Stage After Extended Weather Delay
Tuesday, 23 June 2026
PHILADELPHIA: Kylian Mbappé struck twice and Ousmane Dembélé added another goal as France booked their place in the World Cup round of 32 with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Iraq, in a match interrupted by a lengthy weather delay.
Playing his 100th game for France, Mbappé scored both before and after a thunderstorm forced a stoppage of nearly two hours at halftime, with the goals coming almost three hours apart. "We had a good first half," France coach Didier Deschamps said. "After the interruption, the players resumed with the right attitude despite the unusual circumstances and managed to secure the result."
Mbappé's latest brace took his overall World Cup tally to 16 goals, drawing him level with former Germany striker Miroslav Klose. Earlier in the day, Lionel Messi moved ahead with 18 World Cup goals after scoring twice in Argentina's 2-0 victory over Austria. Mbappé's four goals in the tournament leave him one behind Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.
Ballon d'Or holder Dembélé, who had faced criticism following France's opening 3-1 win over Senegal, also got on the scoresheet. France will now meet Norway on Saturday with top spot in Group I at stake after the Norwegians defeated Senegal 3-2. Deschamps dismissed concerns over Dembélé's form.
"There is no problem," he said. "Ousmane trusts his abilities. People may talk, but I have complete confidence in him. He is still adapting to a different role from the one he plays at club level." Despite suffering a second consecutive defeat, Iraq remain mathematically in contention for one of the best third-place berths. However, they are likely to need victory over Senegal in their final group match and favorable results elsewhere.
Their hopes may also depend on the fitness of Aymen Hussein, who left the field in the 26th minute with an apparent injury after scoring in the opening defeat to Norway. "You have a moment of brilliance from one of the world's best players," said substitute Ali Al-Hamadi. "Then we had to go inside and wait for an hour and a half. It was difficult to maintain the same intensity against a team of this quality, and unfortunately we made too many mistakes."
France controlled possession from the start and opened the scoring in the 14th minute. Mbappé received a pass from Michael Olise on the right, shifted the ball onto his left foot and unleashed a powerful effort from outside the box that beat goalkeeper Ahmed Basil.
Any chance Iraq had of regrouping after the weather interruption disappeared early in the second half when a costly error gifted France a second goal. A misplaced exchange involving defender Zaid Tahseen and goalkeeper Basil allowed Dembélé to set up Mbappé for a simple finish in the 54th minute. Dembélé then added his own goal 12 minutes later, controlling another incisive pass from Olise before firing low past Basil.
While the result itself rarely appeared in doubt, the dramatic weather conditions provided much of the evening's intrigue. Storms intensified around halftime, forcing fans to take shelter inside the stadium. The teams eventually returned for warm-ups nearly 100 minutes later, and the restart was delayed further as ground staff worked to clear standing water from sections of the pitch.
