TEHRAN: Iran's national football team received an emotional welcome from hundreds of supporters at Tehran's Mehrabad Airport, despite narrowly missing out on a place in the knockout rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Fans, including children and families, gathered at the airport waving Iranian flags and wearing the national team's jerseys to celebrate the players' efforts during the tournament.

Iran finished third in its group after drawing all three matches but failed to advance due to an inferior goal difference compared to other third-placed teams.

The atmosphere intensified as the team's flight arrived from Türkiye, where the squad had travelled after leaving its World Cup base in Mexico. Musicians performed the national anthem as players stepped off the aircraft.

Goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand, praised for his performances during the tournament, thanked supporters for their unwavering backing. "We are sorry that we could not bring more joy to our fans by reaching the next round," he told the welcoming crowd.

Defender Ramin Rezaeian said the team believed it was capable of going further in the competition but faced challenges that complicated its campaign. Many supporters also expressed appreciation for the players' efforts.

"The team gave everything on the pitch, and we came here to thank them," one fan said. Iran's hopes of reaching the knockout stage remained alive until the final group matches. The team briefly thought it had secured qualification before other results ultimately ended its campaign.

The tournament was also marked by logistical difficulties surrounding travel arrangements and visa issues involving some members of the Iranian delegation. Despite the disappointment, fans welcomed the players as national heroes, recognising their determination and performances on football's biggest stage.
