WASHINGTON: Iran's hopes of reaching the FIFA World Cup knockout stage remain uncertain after a dramatic 1-1 draw with Egypt ended in heartbreak when a stoppage-time winner was ruled out for offside.
Already assured of a place in the Round of 32, Egypt made a fast start and went ahead inside five minutes through Mahmoud Saber. Iran, however, responded quickly as Ramin Rezaeian equalised from a tight angle following a saved penalty. After an entertaining opening, the match became increasingly scrappy, with both sides struggling to create clear opportunities.
The drama returned in added time when Iran appeared to have secured a famous victory. Mehdi Taremi first struck the crossbar with a header before Shoja Khalilzadeh found the net moments later, triggering wild celebrations among Iranian players and staff. However, their joy quickly turned to despair as a VAR review determined that Khalilzadeh had been marginally offside, disallowing the goal and leaving Iran's qualification hopes hanging in the balance.
The draw sees Egypt finish second in the group with five points, behind Belgium on goal difference. The Pharaohs will now face Australia in the knockout stage on July 3.
Iran, meanwhile, sit third on three points and must wait to learn whether their tally is enough to secure one of the tournament's best third-placed spots.
The match also attracted significant support from both sets of fans, creating a lively atmosphere in the stands as Team Melli's dream of progressing to the next round remains uncertain.
