Staff Report

QUETTA/ISLAMABAD: Major infrastructure projects worth approximately Rs310 billion are underway on the western route of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) in Balochistan, with 718 kilometres of highways under development to improve regional connectivity, facilitate trade and investment, and unlock new economic opportunities across the long-neglected province.

According to official figures, Rs163.17 billion has been released from the funds allocated for highway projects in the western zone, reflecting continued progress on key road infrastructure aimed at connecting remote areas with major commercial centres and national transport networks.

The 330-kilometre Khuzdar-Kuchlak Highway is among the major projects, with Rs82.6 billion allocated for its construction. The project is expected to improve road connectivity and facilitate the movement of people and goods between different parts of Balochistan.

Meanwhile, Rs54.9 billion has been released out of the Rs83.2 billion allocated for road projects covering the Hoshab-Awaran-Nal-Basima-Khuzdar and Zhob-Kuchlak routes. These highways are considered important components of the western CPEC network, designed to improve access to underserved districts and strengthen links with regional trade routes.

Development work on the Basima-Khuzdar route has also made significant financial progress, with 94 per cent of its allocated funds reportedly utilised for development activities.

The western route is a key part of CPEC’s broader infrastructure vision, with improved highways expected to reduce travel times, lower transportation costs and facilitate the movement of agricultural produce, minerals and other goods to domestic and international markets.

The expansion of the road network is also expected to improve access to education, healthcare and other essential services in remote communities, while creating opportunities for businesses and investors.

With strategic road links under development across Balochistan, the CPEC western route is expected to play an important role in promoting regional integration, strengthening commercial activity and supporting long-term economic growth in the province.

The pace of progress and timely completion of these projects will be crucial to ensuring that local communities benefit from improved connectivity, employment opportunities and increased economic activity.
