Balochistan, Centre Pledge Joint Action to Combat Climate Change

Chief Minister Bugti calls Climate Change one of the most serious challenges of present era

QUETTA: Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti and Prime Minister’s Coordinator for Climate Change Romina Khurshid Alam held detailed discussions on the climate challenges facing Balochistan, environmental threats, and a joint strategy to address them.

During the meeting, both leaders agreed to strengthen environmental cooperation between the federal and provincial governments, provide additional resources, and enhance technical support for climate initiatives.

Chief Minister Balochistan highlighted that climate change is one of the most serious challenges of the present era, with its effects being felt most intensely in Balochistan. He noted that the provincial government is implementing a long-term and effective strategy to mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change.

He added that Balochistan has established its first climate fund, aimed at ensuring the timely completion of environmental projects and practical measures in affected areas. Emphasizing the need for comprehensive policy formulation and coordinated action, the Chief Minister stated that such efforts are essential to protect the province from floods, droughts, and other environmental disasters. He also pointed out that while Balochistan’s share of greenhouse gas emissions is negligible, the province bears the brunt of climate impacts, necessitating effective inter-provincial and federal cooperation.

Romina Khurshid assured that the federal government will work closely with Balochistan to tackle climate challenges. She commended the provincial government’s initiatives under Chief Minister Bugti’s leadership, highlighting the inclusion of women and disadvantaged groups in the province’s climate policy as a significant and forward-looking step. The meeting reaffirmed a shared commitment to continue joint efforts to make Balochistan an environmentally safe and sustainable province.
