Waqas Calls for Khan’s Immediate Transfer to Shifa International Hospital, Transparent Medical Examination and Treatment Under Supervision of Personal Doctors
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) voices serious concerns over the medical report regarding the party’s founding chairman Imran Khan’s health, submitted by the Adiala Jail authorities to apex court, saying, "The report vindicated the party’s longstanding concerns and raised serious questions about the conditions in which the former prime minister is being confined."
PTI Central Information Secretary (CIS) Sheikh Waqas Akram said the findings contained in the report present an alarming picture of Khan’s health, including complaints of rapid heartbeat, severe headache, restlessness and heightened anxiety, which could not be treated as routine medical concerns, particularly in the context of his prolonged incarceration and isolation.
In a statement issued by PTI Central Media Department (CMD) on Monday, he said the report had made it imperative for the government to immediately explain why recommended medical investigations and appropriate treatment had not been ensured, despite the seriousness of the concerns raised by the medical authorities.
Waqas said there was a clear contradiction between the claims of the Adiala Jail administration and the recommendations of the medical board pertaining to the facilities being provided to Imran Khan.
He said while the jail authorities claimed that Imran Khan was being provided necessary facilities, including newspapers, books and television, however, the medical board, in its report submitted on August 10, had specifically recommended that these facilities be made available to him and that regular meetings with his wife and family be facilitated.
“If these facilities are already being provided, as claimed by the jail authorities, there is no explanation as to why the medical board found it necessary to recommend them,” Waqas asked, adding that the apparent failure to implement the recommendations raised serious questions about the administration’s compliance with medical advice.
He said prolonged isolation, restrictions on access to information and limitations on family interaction could have serious consequences for a prisoner’s mental and physical well-being, particularly when such restrictions continue for an extended period.
Waqas stated that the government could not evade responsibility by attributing all matters to jail authorities while Imran Khan’s health continued to deteriorate because he was not an ordinary prisoner but a former prime minister and the country’s most popular political leader, and his fundamental rights, health and dignity could not be compromised for political or administrative reasons.
Waqas demanded that Imran Khan be immediately shifted to a properly equipped hospital for a comprehensive and independent medical examination and treatment in accordance with established medical recommendations.
In light of the report submitted to the SC, PTI CIS demanded that Imran Khan must be immediately shifted to Shifa International Hospital, where he should undergo a complete medical examination and check-up under the supervision of his personal physicians, Dr Asim Yousaf and Dr Faisal Sultan.
He specifically demanded that the recommended Coronary CT Angiography be conducted without further delay and that all necessary diagnostic tests and treatment be carried out under the supervision of qualified and trusted doctors of Imran Khan’s choice.
He further demanded that Imran Khan’s personal physicians be fully involved in decisions concerning his medical care and that all medical reports, diagnostic results and treatment details be transparently shared with his legal team.
Waqas warned that any harm to Imran Khan’s health or life resulting from negligence, delay, denial of medical care or failure to implement medical recommendations would carry serious legal, moral and political consequences.
PTI CIS reiterated that the party’s struggle extended beyond the release of Imran Khan and was aimed at establishing a genuine welfare state based on justice, equality, dignity, fundamental rights and compassion, in accordance with the principles of the Model of Madina.
He pledged that PTI would continue its peaceful, constitutional and democratic struggle until every Pakistani was guaranteed equal treatment before the law, fundamental rights and access to justice.
