SIFC Resolves Key Challenge in Russian Foot-and-Mouth Disease Vaccine Supply

ISLAMABAD: The Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) successfully facilitated the resolution of issues related to the continued supply of Russian Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccines to Pakistan.

Russian-manufactured FMD vaccines have been imported into Pakistan since 2012 through FAO and private-sector channels, playing a critical role in safeguarding livestock health and supporting disease control efforts across the country. The suspension of the vaccination campaign in March 2024 had raised concerns regarding the potential spread of FMD, one of the most damaging diseases affecting cattle and other livestock.

Through effective coordination among all relevant stakeholders, SIFC helped address outstanding concerns and facilitated an amicable resolution of the matter. The successful outcome has paved the way for the continuation of Russian FMD vaccine supplies to Pakistan and the resumption of vaccination activities.

The resolution will strengthen animal health protection measures, support livestock productivity, safeguard farmers’ livelihoods and contribute to Pakistan’s efforts to enhance livestock and meat exports. It also reflects the growing cooperation between Pakistan and Russia in the field of animal health and livestock development.
