Berlin Film Festival Director to Remain in Post After Gaza-Related Controversy
Thursday, 05 March 2026
BERLIN: The director of the Berlin International Film Festival, Tricia Tuttle, will continue to lead the event but will operate under newly introduced guidelines following tensions linked to the war in Gaza that overshadowed this year’s festival in February, according to an official statement issued on Thursday.
Speculation about Tuttle’s position intensified last week when the German government held an emergency discussion regarding the future leadership of the renowned film event, widely known as the Berlin International Film Festival or Berlinale. Media reports suggesting that she might be removed from the post triggered a wave of support from filmmakers and cultural figures, including directors, screenwriters and producers, who publicly backed her leadership.
The controversy came after a politically sensitive edition of the festival in which debates surrounding Israel’s military campaign in Gaza intersected with wider discussions on artistic freedom and political expression. The situation highlighted the complex balance Germany faces when addressing criticism of Israel while maintaining its historical commitment to supporting the country, a stance shaped by the legacy of the The Holocaust carried out by Nazi Germany during World War II.
In response to the tensions, the supervisory board overseeing the federal organization responsible for the Berlinale proposed several measures aimed at preventing similar controversies in the future. These include the creation of an advisory forum for the festival and the introduction of a comprehensive code of conduct applicable to federal cultural events.
Tuttle said she would review the recommendations carefully before making any decisions regarding their implementation. In the same statement, Germany’s Commissioner for Culture and Media, Wolfram Weimer, expressed confidence that the proposed measures would help restore broader public confidence in the event.
Weimer emphasized that the focus of the Berlinale should remain firmly on creativity and artistic expression. “Art and artists should once again be at the heart of the Berlinale,” he said.
Israel has consistently rejected accusations that its military operations in Gaza constitute genocide, maintaining that its actions are acts of self-defence.
